Appointment of RUSNANOPRIZE Committee Members
On June 19, 2012, the Board of Directors of OJSC RUSNANO approved the list of Members of the Committee, which will adjudge the International Nanotechnology Award RUSNANOPRIZE 2012. The 2012 Award is dedicated to ‘Medicine, Pharmaceutics and Biotechnologies’. The Committee Members are 15 prominent scientists from all over the world as well as representatives of innovative businesses who have been universally acclaimed as leading achievers in the mentioned fields. The 2012 Award is sponsored by Bayer Group.
The Committee is the principal executive body for the Award, and its scope of authority includes: setting terms for works presentation; selection of applications for Award nomination; passing the resolution on the Prize award and election of the Prize winners in a particular year. In 2012 the RUSNANOPRIZE will be awarded for the first time in the field of ‘Medicine, Pharmaceutics and Biotechnologies’.
Committee Members include Aaron Ciechanover, the Chemistry Nobel Prize winner in 2004 and Distinguished Research Professor of Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. Prof. Ciechanover said: “It is hard to imagine that nanotechnologies will find applications in every field of life, including human health. Dramatic changes have begun, and they will affect absolutely every component of the healthcare system, from visualization to delivery of medicines into any specific body tissues, to custom-made medicines created for an individual patient, and from telecommunications to transportation and computing, and these changes will revolutionize all of our lives for the better”.
Prof. Ciechanover researched the ubiquitin-dependent system and described the role of ubiquitin in the cellular system of protein degradation in proteasomes. His ideas and his research have become the premises for development of new methods in research and treatment of cancer and asthma.
Another Committee Member is Diane Burgess, a prominent researcher of healthcare products, Distinguished Professor of Pharmaceutics at the University of Connecticut, Expert of AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and of AIMBE (American Institute for Medical Biological Engineering).
Prof. Burgess commented that “the RUSNANOPRIZE is recognition of a researcher’s substantial contribution to nanotechnologies, which are revolutionizing the healthcare system and other fields, and transforming our life. It is very important that we celebrate the pioneers in the field and encourage further scientific research and development”.
In 2010, Prof. Burgess became the first scientist ever to receive the award of the international Controlled Release Society (CRS) for her outstanding contribution to medical drug delivery research. She works as a consultant to a number of corporate clients in the finance, food, cosmetics, and other industries.
In 2011, Prof. Burgess received the Nagai APSJ International Women Scientist Research Achievement Award, which is announced annually by the Academy of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (Japan).
The scientific interests of Prof. Burgess are focused on gene therapy and target delivery of medicines: microspheres, emulsions, liposome, and hydrogel.
